Swamp Donkey
Yesterday my squishier half and I took a trip into Kamloops to visit the Kamloops fly shop and generally just poke about. Come evening we were getting hungry and stopped at the first place we found that wasn't fast food. It is in the corner of a mall parking lot and is called "Urban Couch"

It didn't look like anything special, kind of like any other theme type resturaut but cleaner and sleeker, everything in black, big leather couches everywhere. A sign on the door identified it's "executive chef" and I thought "Oh great" as I mentally added another 25% to the bill. wink.gif

I guess it would be safe to say that my expectations we're not high. Really all we were looking for was a place that didn't serve the food through the window of the car. Boy was I wrong and very happy to be so!

We picked a couple of "package B's" from the taste of BC specials menu. Three courses with wine recommendations ($4 a glass) with each course. It started with grilled Asparagus laid out in a star with tender juicy scallops between each spear and sprinkled with chunky Canadian bacon. The whole thing was drizzled with some sort of soy based sauce. The wine was a Jackson Trigs Chardonnay (which comes in a nice 4 ounce size BTW so you don't get hosed before dinner is over.)

The entree was angel hair pasta (which for once wasn't cooked to mush) that was covered in tiny cubes of heavily smoked chicken, olives, asiago cheese, tomatoes and the odd sun dried tomatoes. It was sprinkled with some very nice olive oil. It came with two very fresh and warm bread sticks that were chewy and lightly herbed. The wine was an Ink'meep Pinot Blanc

Desert was key lime cheese cake but that title in no way does it justice. Quite simply this was the best desert I have ever eaten and I have eaten a LOT of deserts! The lime cheesecake was nicely tart and whipped before being placed in layers of candied won tons and stewed vanilla rhubarb. It had some kind of blackberry or something similar sauce over it and a persiminon with dried flower on the top. It managed to be tart and sweet, light and satisfying all at the same time. Can't remember the wine choice for that one.

All course were served by the some of the hottest waitresses I have ever seen and I exaggerate not at all here cool.gif (Oh and ladies, some of the men they had working there were pretty manly looking too but as I told my wife they are probably gay wink.gif )

All in all one of if not THE best resturaut meals I have ever eaten. We left very pleasantly stuffed without feeling bloated and I will very happily drive the two hour round trip to eat there again!

Total cost for two with wine? $80 cool.gif

You were so busy salivating over the waitresses that you really didn't taste the food! rolleyes.gif Most of them are young enough to be your grandchildren and with piercing and tatoos, have trouble holding liquids!
We like the food there too!

Another recommendation for a good restaurant (on wheels) usually located in the Kamloops area but sometimes operating elsewhere is a place called Peter & Betty's. They serve really good jumbalaya. I don't think the waiter there is gay though, 'cause he really ain't that good looking. tongue.gif wink.gif laugh.gif

been a long time since I was in Kamloops, did Fat Mel's re-open after the fire? that was great food.

Hi Sandy, Unfortunately, Mel passed away shortly thereafter. The restaurant closed and Christine moved to the ABC. She has since retired.
Now that place had good pasta!
Another Kamloops (North) legend has reincarnated itself after a several year absence.
SYROS Greek/Italian food is reopening on Palm St. in N.Kamloops soon.
Our kids grew up on their lasagne on Saturday nights.
Chris Louvros, who was head chef there(Syros) for years, opened Christos on West Columbia St several years ago. His food is great also.
Sorry didn't mean to hijack this thread with a food advert but lots of fisher types from this board might not know about these gems.
tight lines and good eating,

I think the persimmon with the dried flower is called a gooseberry. They are REALLY good when they are in season.

Great post. I'll probably be eating there in a few more days, during the fish-in, and I would like to know some spots. Other than Syros, I don't know much.

Let's see now Swamp Donk, I'll be alone so that is $40CAN. Now knock off my rebate for being an American= $30US. Hmmmmm. I'm not that fond of Angel Hair but there might be something else...

Hmmm black leather would hide the dirt under my finger nails; I might not be noticed in my new fishing shirt from Orivs. I mean Kamloops is the center of the trout universe so if I looked sort of trouty that might work. And then I look like I have money so...

Bob, the and I get some slack because I'm a foreign gentleman, plus I'll come in bold like I own the place. Should be no problem cool.gif
Swamp Donkey
Thanks muddlerman, them's the critters. cool.gif

Don't worry Bob, there's plenty of other stuff, I just haven't tried any. Don't sweat it about being bold and looking like you own the place, it will probably get you the number of one of the hot hot waitresses tongue.gif (or waiters rolleyes.gif Trevor the "don't know what side of the boat Bob dips his net" wink.gif )
MrK
$80?

Holy crap. ohmy.gif

Hey, Trev, you ever go out to the Deer Park restaurant in Vermin? Man, that place has some great food too. Simple food for the most part, but good portions, and the owner is happiest if you walk out full. I love that place.....

Sorry for the hijack. biggrin.gif
