The Goldstream Provincial Park is a nature enthusiasts paradise. There are two vegetation zones within the park where visitors can walk under a canopy of trees such as Douglas fir, western red cedar, western yew, red alder, big leaf maple, western hemlock and black cottonwood. Shrubs and wildflowers such as salal, Oregon grape, red huckleberry, salmonberry, western trillium and calypso grow along the trail edges.

Thousands of chum, chinook and coho salmon spawn annually in the Goldstream River. This river was first named Gold Creek by Lieutenant Peter Leech who, in 1858, discovered gold in it. Old mining shafts and tunnels are found along the trails today.

LOCATION

The park is located 19 km northwest of Victoria. Follow Sooke Lake Road off of the Island Highway to the parks southern entrance. Access to the day-use area is near the junction of the highway and Finlayson Arm Road.

PARK FACILITIES & ACTIVITIES

Camping - A 150 site campground with toilets, water, showers and wood nearby is found within the park. Reservations can be made for the group camping area. A large picnic ground with tables and a cooking shelter is near the campground.

Hiking and Trails - An extensive trail system and self-guided nature walks lead the way to the parks scenic features.

The Freeman King Visitor Centre showcases the area's history with guided walks, talks, slide shows and movies.
